New Braunfels River Rentals
Located near Fayetteville, West Virginia, lies North America's second highest bridge over the New River Gorge. For the past 32 years the bridge has served as a place for some of the world's most extreme sports, B.A.S.E. jumping and rappelling. Every year in October, jumpers from all over world congregate to take a dive over the bridge's breathtaking edge, often to an audience 80,000 strong. The gorge itself is set deep inside West Virginia's gorgeous forested hills.
New River History
The New River Gorge is around 375 million years old, making it one of the oldest rivers, if not the oldest river, in North America. The river ranges between 700 and 1,300 feet deep, from place to place. Interestingly, the gorge was formed by many years of wear and erosion, not glaciers. Along the gorge's rim is a stretch of bare rock cliff that shows the erosion. Some of the 85 miles of the New River are made up of white water rapids, which offers an additional sport in addition to Bridge Day.
A certain stretch of the river is part of the New River Gorge National River. The river contains many tributaries, or smaller streams that flow into larger ones, that give it many waterfalls along its path. For Bridge Day, all of the river's scenic beauty is amplified by the brilliant colors of the trees. Maple, oak, oak-hickory, and hemlock are just a few of the trees that create true fall beauty in this area.
